The term fireball is often used in reference to any large explosion or burst of fire.

In a nuclear explosion, the volume of air around the bomb that is heated to incandescence is referred to as a fireball.

In astronomy, a fireball is a meteor which is large enough to be apparently brighter than the planet Jupiter. Fireballs frequently leave a trail which can be visible for several minutes (glowworms), and can sometimes produce a noise loud enough to be audible from the ground during or shortly after the period in which the fireball is observed.

A Primordial Fireball is a term coined by P.J.E. Peebles to describe the universe during its first 300,000 years of existence. The fireball supposedly derived most of its energy from the annihilation of particles and antiparticles during the first second after the Big Bang.

Fireball is the sixth studio album released by the British hard rock band Deep Purple in 1971.

Fireball is a historically notable pinball machine model released by Bally in 1972. The table was one of the first to have a modern sci-fi/fantasy type of outer space theme as well as elaborate, painted artwork on the sides of the table. The game itself is notable as it featured several pinball innovations, including a spinning disc, moveable "zipper" flippers, and trapped ball bonuses. Fireball was an also an early table to have the multi-ball (three balls, in this case) feature. Fireball's main surface and raised surface also featured elaborate artwork of a flaming "fire man", flames, and stars in space. The table is highly valued as a collector's item.

In fantasy role-playing games, a fireball is a basically a magical grenade created by a spell: a wizard points at the target, casts the spell, and a ball of fire whizzes off at the target, exploding on impact.

In fighting games, fireballs were the name commonly attributed to Ryu and Ken's Hadouken moves in Street Fighter II, and currently refer to any projectile move, energy or otherwise, that a character is capable of throwing.

Fireball Roberts was a highly regarded NASCAR driver.

The Ryan FR Fireball was a World War II-era United States aircraft.

Jerry Lee Lewis once described a lover as a fireball, or Great Balls of Fire.

In the Super Mario Bros. video games, the Fire Flower is a weapon used by Mario and Luigi to shoot fireballs.
